Pocket Dish: Portable DVR

Pocket Dish, a new digital video recorder (DVR) from the satellite broadcaster Dish Network allows you to take around copies of TV programs on a small plastic box that fits into your pocket. A PocketDish can download, record and play content from a PC or Mac, digital cameras, mass-storage devices, as well as from sources such as digital video players, camcorders and video cassette recorders. With PocketDish, you can store, view, and play TV programs, music, as well as your favourite games on the road.

PocketDish models and specifications

PocketDish comes in 3 models: AV700E, AV500E, and AV402E. All three PocketDish have identical specifications of their own. AV700E has the highest specs with 7-inch screens and 40-GB built-in hard drive; AV500E has a 4-inch wide-format screen and can store up to 30 GB of digital files; while AV402E comes in 2.2-inch square screen and 20GB built-in hard drive. All three PocketDish can be connected to other electronic devices (PCs, DVRs, camcoders, digital cameras ...etc) with USB 2.0 connection and standard AV connections. All models of PocketDish supports all sorts of common media files (.avi, .mp3, .mp4, .wav, and .wma) and they come with internal rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery, earphones, USB host adapter, and AC power charger.

Standard PocketDish price ranges from $329 to $599. The purchase price, however, might differs a lot depends on the offer given by individual dealers. Official Dish Network provide $20-$60 rebates for their customers.

What is the send time from a USB 2.0-capable Dish Network receiver to my PocketDISH?
An hour of content will send in about 5 minutes.

Can I record content from a Dish Network receiver that doesn't have a compatible USB connection?
Yes, using the composite input connections on the AV500E and AV700E. Record time is real time (e.g. a half-hour show will take a half-hour to record).

Can I send Dish Network HDTV content to my PocketDISH?
No, only standard definition content can be sent.

Can I send DISH On Demand content to my PocketDISH?
No.

In what format is video content stored?
Content sent from the USB 2.0 port of a DISH Network DVR is MPEG-2. Content recorded from the A/V inputs is encoded by the PocketDISH and stored as MPEG-4. Other video content from a PC is stored in its native format (e.g. MPEG-4 AVI).

What happens when my PocketDISH hard drive is full?
If you try to send content from your DISH Network receiver and there is not enough space available on the PocketDISH, you'll receive a pop-up message. You'll have to delete programs before you can send any more.
