Satellite HDTV basic concept

How does HDTV provide a better viewing quality? Many think HDTV just increasing the definition per unit area. But in fact, what HDTV does is quite the opposite of what many imagine. Fundamentally, HDTV is actually not to increase the definition per unit area, but rather to increase the percentage of the visual field contained by the image.

The majority of proposed analog and digital HDTV systems are working toward approximately a 100% increase in the number of horizontal and vertical pixels. Most probably the pixel will goes up to 1 Mb/frame with 1000 lines by 1000 horizontal points. This naturally results in a factor of 2-3 improvement in the angle of the vertical and horizontal fields. The majority of HDTV proposals also changes the aspect ratio to 16/9 from 4/3 -- making the image more "movie-like"” and provides better amusement experience to the viewer.

Here are some conventional analog HDTV proposals in comparison with existing TV systems.

HDTV deg 8 USA
Total actives lines = 1050 (960V x 675H), Asp. Ratio = 16/9

HDTV deg 9 Europe
Total actives lines = 1250 (1000V x 700H), Asp. Ratio = 16/9

HDTV deg 20 NHK
Total actives lines = 1125 (1080V x 540H), Asp. Ratio = 16/9
