When you subscribe to your Dish Network satellite TV service, you will be getting a bunch of free satellite TV system.There are three main components in this Dish Network satellite TV system -- satellite decoder, the satellite dish, and the Dish Network smart card.

These three parts are integral to every system for Dish Network. To retrieve the satellite signal, you need the satellite dish; the signal retrieved will then transfered to the satellite decoder or socall satellite receiver. Then, the decoder interprets the satellite signals and converts it to a "TV-format" picture signal based on the information in the Dish Network smart card.

It holds what channels you're authorized to view and the money you owe from pay per view purchases. Hence, you need a smart card to use those hardwares and get your satellite TV shows.
