Why watching free satellite TV on PC is not cool

Nowadays more and more people are looking for software to get satellite TV programs via their PC. While the set up cost of satellite-to-pc might be cheaper when compare to legalized satellite TV company, we believe watching satellite TV programs on PC is not a wise consuming choice nonetheless. Main reason being is because the quality and the reliability of the service is highly questionable due to  nature of the service  Further more, if you are okay with watching TV programs via PC, get a peer-to-peer TV software instead, those software are all free in charge.

The reliability of satellite-to-PC system

To watch satellite TV program on your PC you need at least two things: high speed Internet access as well as a PC with average system performance. We all knew how unstable can our Internet access be. Low Internet access speed, ISP server down, or even unstable signal (if you are using wireless Internet) will affect the picture quality severely.

How about PC system? Virus attacks, bugs in operating systems, Trojan files – all these might cause you hours to format and fix. When these problems come in, it goes directly to your so call PC satellite TV as well where you might need to reinstall the satellite-to-PC software and reset all your program channels.

Picture quality of free satellite TV program on PC

Does satellite TV program on PC gives you HD picture quality? Does satellite TV program on PC are showed in high resolution level? The answers are both ‘NO’. Satellite-to-PC program are compacted before it sent to your PC. In order to send these signals smoothly and fast, the picture quality is normally reduced and the resolution of the picture size are normally shrunk during the compact process. In most of the time, you probably will be watching the satellite TV program in a 500 x 450 (px) window on your computer screen. Does that sounds cool to you? Not so.

Customer service for satellite-to-PC?

Don't get me wrong, I do think satellite-to-PC program is an exciting new technology that might change our life somedays. Okay, once again I have to stress that I am extremely impressed with the price of satellite-to-PC service when compare to my usual satellite TV service. With most of the case, setting up satellite-to-pc is even cheaper than half of my monthly subscription fees in Dish Network or DIRECTV.

However, there are lots of commercial issues remains unsolved and from a consumer point of view, I don’t see satellite-to-pc vendor offers strong customer service. Transferring satellite TV program to PC requires set up in computer hardware and installation of software; it does not look simple to me. But, if we want a satellite-to-PC program, we need to do all this by ourselves – what if something went wrong during the set up process? What if I screw up? Is there someone that I can call to? The question remains unanswered in most of the vendor website I visited.

Wrapping things up

Personally I think watching free satellite TV on PC is not cool. The fact that TV became a long lasting household product is because TV brings entertainment to the household. Can you imagine watching TV on a 19” PC monitor with your family stuck crowded into your room? I bet that’s not much of entertainment in it.

But that’s my choice. It is undeniable that satellite-to-pc is dead cheap when compare to regular satellite TV services where you need to pay $20 - $50 for a standard programming package. It might suits your need in case you do not spend long hours sitting in front of TV, in case you do not spend your time with your family watching TVs, in case you prefer to work along at your table when you were watching TV – who knows, the choice is up to you.
